Wednesday morning I located the site of Higdon, Georgia, just up the road from Blue Ridge, and only a couple of miles from Lickskillet. The only indication I found there was the street sign for Old Higdon Road. I talked to a couple of people nearby and learned there used to be a grocery store with a post office, but it was demolished years ago. Someone suggested I ride back to Blue Ridge and talk to Paul Higdon who was a well-known county sheriff for many years.

I returned to Blue Ridge and looked up Paul's phone number and address at a convenience store, but no one answered when I called. I was about to give up and start for home, but I was near the address so I decided to ride to his house in case he was working in the yard or something and couldn't hear the phone.

It turned out that Paul was home after all. His hearing isn't what it used to be, but his wife Nancy got his attention when she heard my knock on the door.

Paul told me his grandfather, Leonard Paul Higdon, settled in the area. The post office, was established at Higdon's Store and was officially named "Higdon Store, Georgia". Paul's parents, Sam and Didi (I'm not sure of the spelling) Higdon, ran the post office at one time. Just as with Higdon, Missouri, the post office was closed when it was consolidated with the one in nearby Epworth.

Paul also told me there are lots of Higdons in and around Bryson City, North Carolina. My return to Asheville took me right by Bryson City, but I had already used up enough of the day so I decided to bypass it. I will visit there when I get the chance.

I reached home safe and sound early Wednesday evening.
